Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help my child make friends?

Laughing children cartoon style | Free SVGSome children find it easy to make friends – they are naturally outgoing. Others may struggle. Here at Little Berries our staff are good at spotting this and often encourage older children to take the younger ones ‘under their wing’; they will also encourage group games.

Encourage your child to talk about who they play with and what they do. You are probably more anxious than they are! Once your child has settled well invite one of their friends over. If your child is tired after pre-school, you may want to wait a while.

Does my child need to be toilet trained?

Sparkling Clean Toilet - OpenclipartWe do not expect children to be fully accomplished at going to the toilet by themselves. If your child is in nappies, we ask you provide the nappies, cleaning wipes, nappy sacks, and any creams. You may find that until now your child has been completely uninterested in using the potty/toilet until they come to pre-school and see lots of other children doing it.

If your child is already toilet trained, do not make them wrestle with zips and buttons but dress them in trousers or skirts with elasticated waists.

Even with these precautions, some children do only want to 'go' on their home toilet, so it is wise to bring in pants/knickers and a change of clothes just in case!

What about dressing themselves?

While you do not have to worry about your child eating, undressing, or putting on shoes, because that is what our staff are used to helping with, you could help them socially. Inviting other children round and encouraging them to ‘chat’ and take turns is helpful.

How do we manage crying?

If your child is upset when you leave, staff are usually happy to distract them, and to reassure you that your child will have stopped sobbing by the time you've reached the end of the path. We encourage you to phone later to check and we will always call you if your child does not settle within a reasonable time.

How does the preschool provide feedback of how my child is getting on?

Each child has a key person who will make observations about your child and track their progress. We use an online ‘Learning Journey’ system called ‘Tapestry’ which allows you to access the information from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you are worried your child isn't settling or have any other concerns, you should speak to your child's key person and try to find out the cause.

We hold parents' evenings at the end of each term, so you can see what your child has been doing. During your parents meeting you will be given the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and their next steps in development!
